One thing I like about Surprise is that it is not as expensive as other Phoenix suburbs. Housing is pretty affordable, though prices are creeping up with the influx of more people.
Groceries and utilities are pretty standard, but don’t forget to consider the cost of transportation, particularly commuting.
Healthcare

Great health facilities are available in Surprise like the Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, rendering excellent health care.
If you want more specialized facilities, Phoenix is just a short drive away and offers great hospitals and specialists. That gives me peace of mind when I know that I’m close to quality healthcare.
Education

If you have kids, you’ll appreciate that Surprise is served by the Dysart Unified School District, which offers strong academic programs and extracurriculars.

Surprise offers job opportunities in a variety of fields, especially in healthcare, education, and retail. If you’re an entrepreneur or small business owner, the city’s growth makes it a great place to set up shop.
I’ve noticed a lot of new businesses popping up lately, which means more job opportunities for everyone.

Getting around Surprise is easiest if you have a car, since public transportation options are limited. I usually take Loop 303 or US-60 (Grand Avenue) to get around, and they connect easily to other parts of the Phoenix metro area.
If you don’t mind driving, it’s a pretty smooth experience, but you’ll want to plan for occasional traffic during rush hours.
Pros of Living in Surprise
Low Crime Rate
Another thing I truly love about living here is the degree of safety that surrounds us. Surprise being one of the safest cities in Arizona, it feels safe just knowing that crime levels are very low in comparison to the country.
Affordable Housing
For affordable living, Surprise is a great option. Not only do you find cheaper houses, but bigger homes than other places around Phoenix.
Outdoor Recreation
I love everything outdoors, so I love being near White Tanks Mountain Regional Park. There’s always something to do outdoors, whether it be hiking, biking, or even a little bit of rock climbing.
Cons of Living in Surprise
Extreme Summer Heat
Well, let’s be real! The summer heat is really gut-wrenching. Here, temperatures are regularly above 100°F, and at times, it seems you have not even entered the door and the feels are like walking into an oven.
If you hate extreme heat, this is the place that will make you cry your heart out.
Limited Cultural Options
If art museums, art galleries, and nightlife bursting at the seams are your thing, then you may be disappointed in Surprise. Things just have a more laid-back feel in this part of the world.
Suburban Feel
The town has kept that old-fashioned suburban feel! Many residential neighborhoods, which can seem a little far apart if you fancy a bit of urban action.
